I’m Catherine Bernard, a lawyer who wants all beings everywhere to be happy, healthy, and free. To make that a reality in all of Georgia and beyond, we need to promote personal responsibility, limited government, economic freedom, and equal opportunity and treatment under the law.
I work on behalf of citizens whose lives, liberties, and property are being threatened by the government. Most of my clients are victims of unjust government overreach. As a public defender, I also represent some individuals who might have been justly charged with wrongdoing, but do not have the resources to pay a private criminal defense attorney to ensure that their constitutional rights are protected.
The injustices my clients are facing are broad and institutional. The criminal justice system is in bad shape, with stakeholders on all sides acknowledging that we’re hurting too many innocent people, while not effectively deterring the real bad actors who threaten public safety. When the justice system can’t be relied on to produce fair and accountable outcomes, the very core of our government is broken – and indeed that’s what more and more citizens are finding out when they tangle with local, state, and federal authorities seeking to control private property and affairs.
Justice reform requires changing hearts, minds, and laws. I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but I’m dedicated to honest truth-seeking and protecting peaceful people from those who seek to interfere with their lives. If that sounds good to you, I hope you’ll join me in wrangling our government back to its job of serving the people, rather than the other way around.
